Welcome. My name is Jeff Bland. I’ve been involved in the medical nutrition field for forty years as a researcher and educator. Over this time, I came to realize that there was a need for a new type of company, a new health platform driven by the desire to connect regenerative agriculture and environmental sustainability together with personalized health care.
Desire doesn’t say it strongly enough. I believe this connection — healthy planet, healthy people — is a social imperative, and I know it’s the driving force behind the creation of Big Bold Health.
From this first thought developed a broader vision to create a health platform online, with products and services that help us all redefine health as something very different from the absence of disease. I’ve always thought that function — how you personally feel inside your body, and how your body is serving you in achieving your personal goals — this was the right path toward improved health.
So the puzzle was taking shape, but there was a missing piece. How would we develop our products and services to actually improve health and function? Where would we focus, and what would guide us along this path forward? That puzzle piece came clear to me, bright as day, on a 3,000-mile trip across China.
Himalayan Tartary Buckwheat
In forming this company, I’ve found serendipities at every turn. The first was Himalayan Tartary buckwheat. There’s common buckwheat, and then there’s Himalayan Tartary buckwheat, an ancient cultivar with a 2,500-year-old history almost entirely lost to the Western world. During my time in China, I found the clarity of vision, the like minds, and the scientific literature to connect the dots around this lost superfood.
Himalayan Tartary buckwheat is a gluten-free, high-protein grain with 100-times the level of certain key phytochemicals — 2-HOBA and quercetin, among others — found in common buckwheat. And here’s the really good news. These phytochemicals are immune-rejuvenating. At a time when the function of our immune system lies at the forefront of understanding inflammation and its relationship to many of the chronic health problems that plague us in the modern world, Himalayan Tartary buckwheat emerged as a powerful way to address immunity before we even get to those problems downstream.
Dutch Harbor Cod Livers
The story then moves from China to Alaska, where my travels brought me to a unique oil derived from the livers of line-caught cod in the pristine waters of the Bering Sea. Like Himalayan Tartary buckwheat, this oil has a rich history of use outside the Western world. It’s a centuries-old health-promoter deeply ingrained in the culture of Aleut Alaskan natives.
As I went deeper into re-examining cod liver oil through the lens of modern science, I found myself back in the immune system. This marine superfood has a unique nutrient profile — namely PRMs, or pro-resolving mediators — that rejuvenate immunity in ways only recently recognized by the scientific community. There’s a lot more to fish oil done right than you might think.
Ancient Wisdom Through the Lens of Modern Science
From these discoveries, Big Bold Health launched its first two products — HTB Rejuvenate and Dutch Harbor Omega — and landed on a personality. We would respect and study the ways in which nutritional superfoods were integrated within the traditional, sustainable lifestyles of ancient cultures.
We found our calling as a new type of health company, with one foot in traditional cultures and the other in modern science.
Something else came clear through all this serendipity. With HTB Rejuvenate and Dutch Harbor Omega, the lens of modern science was pointing me to the immune system as the root cause of so many health concerns in modern life. Whether that means fatigue and low energy, disrupted sleep, skin trouble and allergies, or stress, mood, and brain fog, immunity is the right first step for improvement.
I’m a voracious reader of clinical research across many disciplines, and by connecting some more dots, the puzzle came into still more focus. Recent breakthroughs in research now tell us that the immune system has a memory. As we age and our bodies suffer damage, the signaling of that damage gets imprinted. We get inflamed, and the memory of that inflammation lingers. Our cells stay inflamed and lose resiliency. We’re always on high alert for an attack that may or may not come.
To reboot our immunity and flood the system with new cells not yet imprinted with this damaged messaging, we need to get better at clearing the debris. I believe that our key ingredients drawn from ancient cultures, health ingredients from a time in human history when we weren’t so inflamed, do just that.
Big Bold Health then became a company squarely focused on immuno-rejuvenation as our target to improve health and function across the systems of the body. It’s becoming clearer and clearer that it’s just not enough to “support” or “boost” an immune system already locked into dysfunction. First, you need to rejuvenate that immune system.
And it’s not just our immunity in need of rejuvenation. I believe that there are immune systems at multiple levels working together to affect our health. Plants have immune systems. When we eat immuno-rejuvenating plants like Himalayan Tartary buckwheat, we help to rejuvenate our own immunity. When we respect the sea and fish it the right way, its bounty offers up immuno-rejuvenating nutrients like PRMs, not found in heavily processed fish oils.
When we approach a business in this way, we promote balance and harmony at a planetary level. Spaceship Earth has its own immune system, a supersystem of self-regulation and harmony that’s now giving clear warning to us of man-made dys-harmony and dys-function. We can see it everywhere, in the breakdowns of our soil, our oceans, our bodies. As better stewards of land and sea, Big Bold Health would stand firmly with regenerative practices, and this would inform our decision-making across the supply chains of all our products. We would do things the right way, with the right people, and be very selective in the products that we ultimately bring to you.
That’s the story of Big Bold Health, the company I’ve been working toward for 40 years. It’s a company founded on connections, transparency, service, and innovation. It’s big and bold about health. It does not apologize for its advocacy of personal health and environmental stewardship. It embraces new knowledge, especially for what it can teach us about the old ways.
I now recognize that this is just the start of what will come for this company. I don’t know where this journey will take Big Bold Health, but I am confident that if we follow the guideposts that got us this far, they will lead us toward a better future. We will help to rejuvenate your immunity, to rejuvenate the global immunity of our species, and to rejuvenate the immune system of our planet.
That’s our social imperative, and our reason to exist as a company. Thanks for embarking on this journey with us.
