Why Himalayan Tartary Buckwheat Flour stands apart from other products in your pantry

As the only producer of organic Himalayan Tartary Buckwheat Flour in the United States, we’ve spent a considerable amount of time getting to know the unique aspects of this seed. From the way we cultivate the seed’s soil microbiome to the minimal processing of the seed after harvest, we take every care to maximize the nutritional content of this crop while maintaining excellent standards of quality for our consumers. This means our Himalayan Tartary Buckwheat flour is grown and produced differently from most mass market grains and seeds. Here are some of the most important considerations around this topic:

Himalayan Tartary Buckwheat flour from Big Bold Health is a live food.

Our flour is produced from a unique ancient variety of Tartary Buckwheat that is extraordinarily high in immune active nutrients. It is grown in upstate New York on farms that utilize organic and regenerative agricultural methods. It is milled in an organic approved facility with specialized techniques that preserve the immune active nutrients and its live food character.

The Big Bold Health Himalayan Tartary buckwheat flour comes from a special seed that is one of more than 167 known different Tartary buckwheat genetic varieties (J Agric Food Chem 2023; 71: 20131-20145). Our unique variety has been shown by independent analysis to have levels of immune active polyphenol/flavonoid nutrients that are 60-100 times higher than other types of buckwheat.

Himalayan Tartary Buckwheat Flour from Big Bold Health is a live food because it has not been pretreated with high heat, nor has it been bleached to sterilize it, which is a processing technique used for most mass-produced commercial flours. Our artisanal milling approach allows for the preservation of active enzymes and other sensitive biomolecules. We routinely test for harmful bacteria such as salmonella, e coli, and toxic fungal contaminants. The levels of these organisms in the flour are verified by independent food laboratories to be at allowable levels in accordance with regulatory standards.

Big Bold Health’s Himalayan Tartary Buckwheat is grown on small family farms, where we take an innovative approach to improving the soil microbiome and the plant’s microbiome through a nature-first growing process that avoids exposure to agricultural chemicals and NPK fertilizer. The live food character of Big Bold Health’s Himalayan Tartary Buckwheat Flour is in part a result of the mycorrhizal status of the plant and its effect on the immune active nutrient levels. Our objective in producing Big Bold Health Himalayan Tartary Buckwheat Flour is to optimize both the immune active nutrient levels, and create a favorable microbiome for both the soil and the final plant.

Preparation of Himalayan Tartary Buckwheat flour

As is the case for all flour products, we recommend cooking our Himalayan Tartary Buckwheat Flour before consumption. It goes great in baked goods, pancakes, sauces, and much more! If you are looking for a delicious alternative that can be consumed without cooking, check out our Himalayan Tartary Buckwheat Sprout Powder.
